A top-loading washing machine has a top cover which may be placed in a hollow of the outer casing to avoid protrusion. The cover comprises a frame or base in moulded plastic, which may receive a glass plate for viewing the interior. The smaller sides of the lid contain the handle and the half-shafts for a hinge joint. The larger sides have a shaped stainless steel strip which adjusts to pressure on to a tongue of the frame. In the closed position, the lid is held in contact with the edge of the opening by a flexible lip of a connecting insert.
