Each packet has a caption indicating its destination. A switch comprising a number of interface sections each having an input and output section is provided, together with a first spatial preselection stage whose inputs are connected to the interface inputs. The preselection stage partial access outputs, and a second temporal stage with independent memory cells of package capacity each being associated with a control microprocessor and connected to the preselection stage outputs. The cells are in groups coupled through microcomputers controlled by the microprocessors. A third spatial mixing stage has sections whose inputs are connected to the cell outputs of respective cell groups and whose outputs give access through intermediate links to a fourth final selection stage whose outputs connect with output interface section. Two computers duplicate control of the switch and control the group microcomputer, and a local clock.
