The device operates within a vertical channel (7) on the rim of the bin (3) which is fitted removably to a base (1). A rotary cutter projects upward from the base into the bin and is driven by an electric motor under the control of a switch (11). The switch is operated by a permanent magnet (12) on the lower end of a spring-loaded plunger (8) only when the bin and its lid (10) are secured in position and the cutter is inaccessible.. The appts. is more childproof than prior-art devices with electromechanical switches, and the spring-loaded mechanism is shielded from dust.
