Massive dual porosity gas electrode - has two contiguous layers one with pores for electrolyte contact and one with larger pores for gas contact

Electrode for use in a vertical position in a large scale electrolytic cell comprises two juxtaposed contiguous porous layers. One layer has relatively fine pores and is for immediate electrolyte contact and the other has larger pores and is for gas contact. The pores in both layers define a network of interconnected interstitial passages which has a capillary pressure effect upon fluid forced into the network. The magnitude of the capillary effect is such that gas under a pressure of 1 psi can enter the larger pores but not the finer pores and so cannot bubble out through the composite electrode. Esp. suitable for use as an O2 gas bearing electrochemically reducing cathode in cells employing substantial electrolyte liq. depth creating head pressures greater than 1 psi.
