The principal application of the proposed instrument is to telephone subscribers appts. where the pre-recorded messages are short. A digital memory is incorporated in the telephone circuit in which several different messages can be recorded. The memory output is to a speech synthesiser which converts the digital message into analog signals for transmission. The instrument has a switch for selecting which message it is desired to transmit automatically. As the recorded messages are assumed to be short the memory space required can be incorporated in, or taken from, the facility for storing often used numbers. The instrument typically also incorporates a switch for blocking or unblocking the automatic answering facility. An instrument with push-button number selection is the most readily adaptable for incorporating the propsed answering facility.
