The catch which holds windows ajar for ventilation includes two (8,11) halves which are mounted on the opening window and the outer frame respectively. The first (8) guides a sliding latch (25) which is urged into at least one recess (14) in the second (11) by a spring (26). A brake detent incorporating a second spring (27) exerts a force against the latch (25) which is greater than the force exerted by the first spring (26) and holds the latch (25) in a withdrawn position. The latch (25) and/or the brake can be manually released using a handle (31).
