The gas blast high voltage circuit breaker with a moving contact inserted into a cylinder with double walls between which is supported a fixed piston, has the top of the cylinder formed by a ring of radial segments (4). The gas is forced through the narrow gaps between the segments against the end of the moving contact as it enters into the engaged position. The tops of the segments are curved, forming a return bend, so that arcs (1) struck on the tops (3) of the curved parts tend to travel inwards around the curved surfaces. The length of the segments forms an arc extinction path and the distance (X) inside the bent over ends is greater than the inside diameter (2) between their tips. The operative length of the path is about one and a half times the inside diameter.
