The device has two bucket wheels mounted symmetrically on a main frame each driven by a motor (15) via a respective drive chain. A selective coupling (16) e.g. a plate clutch is provided between the motor (15) and the drive chain and each of the latter can be coupled via a take-off gear (17) and a coupling shaft (18) to a selective coupling (19) for interconnection of the drive chains. Pref. each of the coupling shafts (18) is supported by two spaced bearings (24,25) and is connected to the output shaft (22) of the take-off gear (17) via a double gear connection. The switched coupling (19) between the coupling shafts (18) may comprise a hydraulic clutch enclosed in a dust-proof casing. The handling device can be used for loading or discharging cargo.
