The mechanism is intended for laterally moving rod material or the like, particularly during cooling. It comprises support grating bars (5) which move vertically and horizontally and grating bars (12) which receive the rod material after each horizontal step of the bars (5). Each grating is swivelably supported at one end by a horizontal shaft, via a swivel bearing at extreme other end, and vertically liftably supported at its other end via a horizontal shaft i.e. (5) by an eccentric (10a) on a shaft by a roller (18) on a swivel arm. The liftable supports (10, 18) are at opposite ends of the two grating assemblies and are driven to move in opposite directions by a common motor (M) via a coupling rod (21) and an eccentric (10b) on the shaft (10).
