The mechanism is intended for palleting and de-palleting hollow containers (14) at a station (3) receiving each pallet (7) via a roller track (1) which continues to remove the full (or empty) pallet. At this station the pallet is lifted (4,5) and a gripper head (42) moves (38,39,43) containers between the station and a marshalling point (12) whilst a further gripper head (41) moves (38-40) interleaving boards (11) between the station and a supply (8). The station comprises a rectangular shaft (15) with an open top (21) and bottom whose cross-section accepts the pallet. The lower end of the shaft front wall (16) has a cut-out to allow an empty pallet to pass whilst the rear wall hinges open to provide a passage for loaded pallets. The two side walls (18,19) can be moved apart in the lateral direction.
