The automatically operated cutting machine is a type used for slicing sausages or hard cheese and uses endless belt conveyors delivering the foodstuff to a rotating cutter disc which may be rapidly braked. The main axis of the machine as at an acute angle, e.g. 20 deg. and drive is by an electric d.c. motor by means of an electromagnetic coupling. The coupling is connected to an automatic braking device responsive to an electronic control circuit incorporating a sensor, counter and comparator. The electronic circuit has a connection between the comparator and an RS flip-flop, with resetting signal passed to it from a second comparator which releases the brake after the end of the cutting operation. The control circuiting is contained in a box unit cable connected to the drive spindle and to the carriage feed machine and air cylinder.
