The method for dividing stock materials into part lengths, in a production process extending over at least two processing stages, especially in rolling or continuous casting plants, can be performed either with a view to maximum piece weight of the parts or to division without leftover ends. As a criterion for the decision as to which dividing method should be employed, the change in productivity which results in at least one part-length processing stage downstream of a first stage when dividing with a view to maximum piece weight and when dividing with a view to freedom from leftover ends, taking into account the minimum time intervals to be maintained between successive part lengths, is determined and a comparison made with the change in the yield from the processing stage in which the stock materials are divided when dividing with a view to maximum piece weight and when dividing with a view to parts free from leftover ends. If the result of the change in the productivity in the downstream processing stage(s) is larger than the result of the change in the yield from the upstream processing stage, division is carried out with a view to maximum piece weight and if the result of the change in the yield from the upstream processing stage is larger than the result of the productivity change in the downstream processing stage(s), division is carried out with a view to freedom from leftover ends. <IMAGE> |
