<p>Reinforcing rings 6 with outwardly projecting flaps 10 or ears are taken one by one from a magazine 7 and are transferred to a ready position from which they are moved downwardly onto a thermoplastic sheet material 2 for being welded thereto. In the ready position the rings 6 are supported solely at their flaps 10 or ears which, by being upwardly deflected, remain in engagement with their support means 5 during almost the entire downward movement of the ring main body, thereby preventing the ring from dropping free of a pressure shoe 13 used to force the ring main body down upon the sheet material.
