PURPOSE:To obtain dl-mandelic acid as a medicine or its intermediate, industrially and advantageously, by the oxidation of easily synthesized styrene glycol in the liquid phase with a gas containing molecular oxygen in an aqueous alkali in the presence of a metallic catalyst selected from the platinum group. CONSTITUTION:Styrene glycol as a raw material is oxidized in the liquid phase with a gas containing molecular to oxygen in an aqueous alkali, e.g. solution of hydroxide of an alkali (earth) metal dissolved or dispersed in water, in the presence of a metallic catalyst selected from the platinum group, e.g. platinum, palladium, etc. or an oxide thereof, to give dl-mandelic acid. The stylene glycol as a raw material is, for example, given readily and in high yield, by the hydrolysis of the epoxidized styrene. This method may avoid the removing operation of the oxidizing agent after the reaction in the conventional method, because of the gas containing the molecular oxygen used as an oxidizing agent. |
