A method for bending inward the ends of a formed piston ring(22) such that a portion of the length of the ring on either side of the ring gap(23) defines a smaller radius of curvature than the remainder of the ring, comprises applying heat(18) to the inside surface of the ring along the portions of the length of the ring to a depth less than half the thickness of the ring, to a temp. sufficient and for a period of time sufficient to cause the internal structure of the heated portion of the ring to yield under thermal compression, and allowing the heated portion of thr ring to cool.
