Gases having a high methane content are produced by passing a heated mixture of ethanol vapour and steam over a nickel-alumina catalyst, the temperature of the mixture not exceeding 350 DEG C and the maximum temperature in the catalyst bed being maintained below 450 DEG C. The process makes use of commercially available catalysts at pressures commonly used in gas manufacture and has high thermal efficiency. The methane-containing gas is particularly suited to SNG manufacture but can also be used for the production of other fuel gases, synthesis gases or hydrogen. |
