PURPOSE:To secure transmission of the steering force even when the locking of the adjusting mechanism is released by providing a locking member engaged with the outer shaft by means of splines and a protrusion and a tapered part for the inner shaft. CONSTITUTION:An inner shaft 17 and an outer shaft 15 connected with each other by means of splines are turned in the same direction when a steering wheel 11 is turned. In performing the axial adjustment of the steering wheel 11 of such mechanism, a lever 25 is turned in a direction shown by an arrow to move a locking rod 22 leftward. the engagement betwen tapered parts 35 and 37 is released by moving a locking member 28 leftward so that the axial adjustment of the steering wheel 11 is allowed. After the axial adjustment of the steering wheel 11 has been completed, the lever 25 is turned in the reverse direction to make the taper part 37 of the locking member 28 firmly engage with the tapered part 35 of the inner shaft 17 so that the device is locked. |
