PURPOSE:To manufacture a billet with a good shaped crop, by making notches in a specified interval from both sides of breadth in a continuously cast slab, by cutting the slab at the center of notches, and by subjecting thus obtained billet to the edging work through a box caliber. CONSTITUTION:A horizontal press 12 is installed in front of the slab cutter 13 in order to make notches N in a specified interval in a cast slab S from the continuous casting chamber 11. The press 12 presses the slab S from both sides of breadth by forward and backward moving a couple of dies 12A. Then, the cutter 13 cuts the slab S along the line connecting the central apexes of notches N, and a preliminarily shaped billet S1, whose top and bottom side planes are inclined toward the middle of the end plane, is obtained. This billet S1 is heated, is raised up to stand the breadth vertically, and is subjected to the edging work through a box caliber; hereby, a preliminary rough billet S2 is prepared. The end part of the billet S2 is formed almost straight, and besides, the thickness at the middle does not cause an excessive increase. Moreover, the billet S2 is further finished by a caliber into a specified rough billet. |
