The present invention is intended to solve the problem of continually monitoring the state of the cylinders in a piston engine in order to detect abnormal function of these. The problem is solved by the torque from the engine's outgoing shaft being measured as a function of the crank angle and the lowest order Fourier component in the torque being determined, whereupon the Fourier component is compared with a reference value, and the phase position for deviations between the Fourier component and the reference value, exceeding a predetermined threshold value, is determined for indicating cylinders with abnormal function. The elapsed time of the torque is hereby measured and input into a calculation and comparison unit, which upon the detection of the said deviations exceeding the threshold value, activates indication means 8 to indicate corresponding cylinders with abnormal function. <IMAGE> |
