<p>Abattoir process and installation are for converting waste blood into a clotted paste. The waste blood is fed into the lower end of a screw conveyor which is inclined slightly to the horizontal, pref at between 2 and 8 deg. The blood is heated as it is conveyed so that the upper end of the conveyor discharges a homogeneous paste. The converyor is pref equipped with two, coaxial screws in series. The first of the screws has a helix of shorter pitch than the second. The first screw rotates faster than the second. The ratio of helix pitches of the two screws is pref inversely proportional to the ratio of speeds of the two screws. The first screw is pref rotated at between 10 and 30 r.p.m and the second screw at a higher speed between 20 and 60 r.p.m. The conveyor is pref steam jacketed to operate at between 85 and 110 deg C. Used to convert waste blood in abattoirs into a homogeneous clotted paste of approximately the same compsn as blood. The prod is intended partic as an ingredient for pet food prods. The paste is easy to handle and to pack into containers for transport at ambient temp the paste will keep in good condition for 12 days or so. The process obviates irreversible sepn of plasma and red cells and is cheaper to operate than processes in which the blood is dried to a powder.</p> |
