The invention relates to a method for the production of a tapered rod for a helical spring consisting of a metallic material, principally steel, this material being in the form of a round bar. This rod is heated in such a way that there is a predetermined temperature gradient distribution in the axial direction of the rod, and the said rod, which is clamped at two axially spaced points, is then drawn by means of tensile forces at a gradually decreasing rate or a rate decreasing in steps until the desired tapered shape is achieved.
