1,2-Dihydro-1-R-5-PY-6-Q-3H- pyrazoloÄ3,4-bÜpyridin-3-ones of the general formula I: (R=alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, 2,3- dihodroxypropyl, alkoxyalkyl; Q=H, alkyl; PY=3- or 4-pyridyl optionally bearing one or two alkyl substituents) and acid-addition salts thereof, which are cardiotonic agents, are prepared by reacting an alkyl 2-halo-5-PY-6-Q- nicotinate with 1-R-hydrazine. The alkyl 2-halo-5-PY-6-Q-nicotinates and acid addition salts thereof are intermediates or cardiotonics.
