Transverse shock waves parallel to the ground are transmitted by a piston assembly which rests on a platform. This enables the positions of the various elements to be defined and allows the complete assembly to be readily moved to another position. The platform has a base with protrusions to permit anchoring to the ground. Rails are attached to the inner surfaces of two perpendicular side plates to permit mounting of an auxiliary chassis. The chassis is attached to the platform by rows of flexible pillars. The chassis supports the generator which produces the equal and opposite forces. A piston travels horizontally to strike a plate attached to a support on the base. A detector measures the strain forces applied to the plate for use as a reference for the seismic recordings.
