The display device using an integrated circuit, has a transparent outer layer (19) protecting an indicator layer (17) below which is an insulating layer (10) in which are embedded electrodes (51,50) spaced apart and insulated from each other. The indicator layer has its optical properties varied by altering the voltage across the electrodes, and is divided into zones. Behind these layers is the control circuit (11), remote from the indicator surface. An electric field is generated within this circuit, and applied to conductors (20,21) behind the insulating layer, to control the indicator layer. This field can be generated by a low frequency oscillation or a pulsating d.c. flow. A low frequency of between 1 and 10 Hz may be used, or a high frequency of 100 Hz or more. To prevent breakdown, further conductors (23) forming part of the printed circuit are included along another plane behind the plane of the other conductors.
