7 beta -[D-2-Amino-2-(lower alkylsulphonylaminophenyl)acetylamino]-3-R-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acids of the formula I in which R is halogen, preferably chlorine, or lower alkoxy, preferably methoxy, are prepared. The process is based on sulphonation of the free amino group on the phenyl ring of corresponding 7 beta -(D-2-amino-2-aminophenylacetylamino)-3-R-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acids. The compounds are active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. <IMAGE>
