The technical problem of preparing alpha -oxoesters of the general formula <IMAGE> in which R and R' are alkyl, aryl, arylalkyl and cycloalkyl radicals, it being possible for R also to be hydrogen, is solved by vigorously oxidising an acetylenic compound of the type: R-C IDENTICAL C-OR' with an oxidising agent such as osmium tetroxide, preferably in the presence of an alkali metal chlorate or alkaline earth metal chlorate.
