Method and apparatus for opening, conveying and separating flat, moist, empty and unfolded casing tubes such as sausage skins are disclosed. A partial vacuum is applied to the outer walls of the tubes to open them and the tubes are then conveyed in the opened condition to a filling and closing station. The degree of vacuum actually applied can be varied according to the gas permeability of the tubes. ,
