The device comprises a vehicle which runs on a rail. The vehicle consists of a trailer and of a rack-type drive device. The teeth of the rack wheel (24) are rollers (23) which engage with openings (28) made in the web of I-shaped girders which constitute the rail. The rack wheel is driven successively by the motor via a centrifugal clutch (2), a conical wheel (3), another conical wheel (5) or (4) depending on the direction of operation, an elastic coupling (11), a worm engaged with a ring gear whose axis is coincident with that of the rack wheel. The device serves for transporting equipment and crops in areas which are remote from road access such as vineyards, orchards and the like. <IMAGE>
