PURPOSE:To manufacture an optical fiber with a small transmission loss without any damage by radiation by using as a raw material a silicon compound resolving at a relatively low temperature and by using composite silica glass obtained at a low composition temperature with a little structure defection for a high-refractive-index part. CONSTITUTION:To a burner of a quartz glass pipe, O2 gas is flowed together with H2 and (or) D2 as flame accelerating gas to put them in flames, and an organic compound such as Si(OC2H5)4 resolving at a relatively low temperature or hydride such as SiH4 is led into the flames together with the carrier gas to bring about flame reaction. Thus, impalpable powder of silica glass containing an OH group and (or) OD group slightly is obtained and then applied onto a target in rotation to form a lamination on the target with the glass fused, making silica glass as a high-refractive-index part. This is united with a low-refractive-index part of silicone resin, etc., into a fiber, so that the aimed optical fiber is obtained. |
