This invention concerns the use of inducible promoter sequences in the production of elevated amounts of proteinaceous and other materials by transformed eucaryotic cells. Eucaryotic cells which have been cotransformed with a gene coding for a desired proteinaceous material such as insulin, antibody or interferon protein, linked with an inducible promoter sequence and introduced into an appropriate cell will, in the presence of an inducing agent, produce elevated quantities of desired protein or other material. This approach can additionally be used with gene amplification techniques to produce extremely high amounts of desired proteinaceous or other materials. This invention also provides methods for the therapeutic treatment of genetically defective eucaryotic cells and of persons suffering from genetically-based diseases or illnesses such as sickle cell anemia. |
