<p>The safety device for a tilting garage door has an automatic declutching mechanism between the electric door operating motors and the horizontal shaft carrying the door. If the door encounters an obstacle during its swing the extra torque causes disengagement of the coupling. The door is carried on a shaft which is coupled through a plate and recessed spheres to a gear meshed with the drive motor output. The gear is free to slide along the shaft but is normally held close to the shaft plate by a spring, so the spheres engage in spherical holes in the gear face. If the torque load increases beyond a level set by the spring constant and the position of a spring adjusting nut, the spheres are forced out of the holes in the gear face, removing the drive between gear and door.</p> |
