A tyre carcass building drum comprises a series of elongated segments(24) radially movable between expanded and collapsed positions. Each segment is provided at its ends with a radially inwardly directed integral flange(40) having a groove. The grooves of each flange cooperates to form annular grooves to receive the bead(48) seat of the tyre carcass being built. The bead seat is rigid and has a depth-to-width ratio>3 which does not vary during expansion and contraction of the segments. Each bead-seat preferably has an arcuate extent in a section axially of the segments. Distorsion of the beads is prevented.
