The mechanism is intended for starting a combustion engine using compressed air. An air-driven turbine (4) rotates the starter pinion (12) via a centrifugal coupling (5) and gear reduction (6,7). When air is admitted to the turbine, it also enters a cylinder (9) to actuate a piston (10). This axially moves the pinion (12) into engagement with the gear teeth (13) on the engine flywheel.
