The unit is for the overhead unwinding of metal wire esp. of a dia. larger than 10 mm from a reel lying with the axis vertically and fitted with a hawse rotatable relative to the wire reel. The hawse (4) is positioned at a distance from the fully wound reel (2) and a rod (6) is located parallel to the axis of the reel at a distance from the outer circumferential surface and extending over the entire length. Two or more rods may be fitted at a distance from each other.
