Coke oven coal prodn. - by compacting coking coal

Coal charge for coke ovens is produced by compacting coking coal, partic. coking coal difficult to carbonise, by compressing into slabs in the roller ring of a smooth roller press. The slabs pref. have breaking score-lines so that they can be broken up to a predetermined piece size after cooling. Dust-like constituents are removed from the coal by air separation and/or screening. The coal may consist of a mixture of broken slabs and a portion of undersize and/or uncompacted coking coal. The mixture ratios are 40-50%(pref. about 50%) slabs and 20-60% (pref about 50%) breeze and/or undersize and/or uncompacted coking coal.. The invention provides coke oven coal of the greatest possible density and bulk density in order to favourably influence both the strength of the coke and the coking time. Also, as the roller surfaces do not contact each other the wear on the rollers is reduced.
