Erosion- and corrosion-resistant coatings for appts. in the chemical and allied industries are comprised of a layer of a natural- or synthetic rubber based coating compsn. having as low as possible a rebound elasticity (DIN 53 512) and as high as possible a Shore A hardness (DIN 53 505). Pref. the rebound elasticity is 40-65% and the Shore A hardness 40-80. Suitable rubbers are e.g. natural rubber, polyisoprene rubber, ethylene-propylene rubber, butyl rubber, polychloroprene, chlorosulphonated polyethylene, fluoroelastomers, nitrile rubber, silicone rubber, SBR, etc. The rubber layer is esp. 0.3-6mm thick, and made by calendering. The calendered sheets may be laminated together or with vulcanised layers to form thicker sheets. The rubber sheets are bonded to the metal surface to be protected in the known way (e.g. VDI guidelines 2537) and vulcanised in situ to form the corrosion resistant layer. The layers have improved resistance to erosion and corrosion under rigorous conditions in chemical plant, and are useful for protecting metal surfaces in pipes, centrifugal pumps, blowers, fans, etc.
|
