PURPOSE:To prevent the liquid leakage of a battery, by providing a positive part which is constituted of a hollow cylindrical positive electrode and a L-form positive ring, which consists of a cylindrical part which has numbers of small holes and is placed in and connected to the positive electrode, and a horizontal flange which is provided over the cylindrical part. CONSTITUTION:The positive part of a cylindrical mercury battery is constituted of a hollow cylindrical positive electrode 1 placed in a positive case 3, and a positive ring 2. The positive ring 2 consists of a cylindrical part 2A which has numbers of small holes 2c and which is placed in and connected to the positive electrode 1, and a ringlike horizontal flange 2B which is provided over the cylindrical part 2A. A mercury battery is constituted by combining the positive part, a negative electrode 5, and a separator 4 which is interposed between the positive part and the negative electrode 5. The porosity of the small holes 2c is preferred to be 20-50% of the area of the cylindrical part 2A when the internal resistance as well as the strength are taken into consideration. Owing to the above constitution, the deformation of the upper part of the positive electrode is not caused during when the battery is sealed, and thereby the liquid leakage of the battery is decreased. Consequently, the deterioration of the performance, which might be caused by local short- circuits during the preservation, can be prevented. |
