PURPOSE:To prepare D(-)-beta-hydroxyisobutyric acid (A-substance), economically, in an industrial scale, by treating isobutyric acid and/or methacrylic acid with microorganisms capable of converting said acids to A-substance. CONSTITUTION:Microorganisms capable of converting isobutyric acid and/or methacrylic acid (raw materials) to A-substance, and belonging to Saccharomyces genus, Trigonopsis genus, etc., e.g. Saccharomyces cereviciae, Trigonopsis variabilis, etc. are cultured in a medium containing an assimilable carbon source. The raw materials are treated with the ultured liquid, microbial cells or treated cells, and the produced A-substance is separated therefrom. The culturing is carried out aerobically, at 20-40 deg.C, and a medium pH of 4.0-9.5. The separation of A-substance can be performed by conventional extractive purification process. |
