PURPOSE:To prepare a strong caking component useful as a caking agent for a steel-making caking coal, a needle coke or the like economically in a high yeild, by subjecting a stock oil to two-stage treatment under specified reaction conditions. CONSTITUTION:Petroleum-based heavy oil (one containing about 5wt% or more asphaltene or residual carbon component is pref.) is treated under conditions where a reaction temp. is about 380-440 deg.C and a stay time is about 1-10hr to form a heat-treated product of which a content of beta-resin (which is a polynuclear aromatic compound insoluble in benzene and soluble in quinoline) is about 10wt% or below. Subsequently, said product is treated under conditions where a reaction temp. is about 410-470 deg.C and a stay time is about 5-60min to obtain a strong caking component of which the beta-resin content is about 15wt% or more and a content of gamma-resin (which is a polynuclear aromatic compound insoluble in quinoline) is about 25wt% or below. |
