The means for compensating for expansion movements of a pipeline (1) in critical expansion zones (D1, D2) of a pipeline (1) which is laid in the ground (3) comprises a sheath (2) consisting of closed-cellular, compressible material whose supporting intrinsic strength can be increased by the compression pressure of the ground (3). In this case, the sheath (2) has a circular cross-section in the unloaded state.
