The motor compressor is pref. in the form of a reciprocating compressor, sprung-mounted in a capsule suitable for a refrigerator. The cylinder is mounted on a bearing housing fixed to the stator of the electro-motor. The drive shaft (28) for the piston (23) is mounted in the bearing housing (18) so that it is positioned vertically. The rotor (29) of the electro-motor (13) is offset w.r.t. the stator (14). The piston drive is installed above the electro-motor and the rotor lies lower than the stator. The rotor has permanent magnets (29') on its outer circumference. This arrangement permits an axial bearing to be completely or partially dispensed with, reducing cost and friction. The magnetic forces generated produce a mechanical effort forcing the rotor upwards.
