Epicyclic gearing is located in the interior, with the drive stage for engaging the planetary gear outside at the side, on a boom-mounted bucket wheel on an excavator. The bucket-wheel unit is mounted so as to turn freely on the periphery of a bell-shaped housing on a flying mounting on the boom. The epicyclic gear is joined to the drive stage as a structural entity, and is insertable in the housing so that its own housing is centered on the inside of the bell, and held so as not to twist. The drive side of the gear is connected to the bucket wheel unit so as to convey rotary moment. The weight on the bucket wheel head is reduced.
