A credit card using a magnetic track is designed to minimise the possibility of falsification. The card consists of a plastic backing (4) with a coating strip of magnetic material (5). The card is passed through a slot formed between two plates (1,2) on a read/write station. A number of write heads (7) and read heads (8) are located in the base plate. An identifying mark locates the card for write operations and this mark is pinched (10) out after recording has taken place. Once punched the location for any read operation is difficult to identify and so provides security against falsification.
