<p>A process for high-speed coating of a sheet or film of flexible material with high-viscosity adhesives, lacquers, etc. uses a smooth-surfaced applicator roller from which excess coating material is removed by a doctor before the sheet is pressed into contact with the applicator by a press roller. The applicator may be supplied with coating material from a pick-up roll dipping into a bath of the material, or pref. the applicator itself also serves as the pick-up roll. The viscosity of the coating material is in excess of 1000 mPa.s, pref. greater than 5000 mPa.s. The thickness of the coating is less than 2.5 g/sq. m, pref. less than 1.5 g/sq. m, and the running speed is greater than 100 m/min., pref. greater than 150 m/min. The process provides a simple and efficient method of applying thin coats of extremely viscous liquids at much higher speeds than existing processes permit.</p> |
