Cpds. (I) contg. cyclic lactam gps. have the formula X-NH-(-R-NH-C(Z):N)-n-R-NH-Y, where R is a (cyclo)aliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic gp.; X and Y are -CO-Z, -COOR1, -C(Z):N-(CH2)3-Si(OR2)3, or -C(Z):N-C6H4-R3, in which R1 is R4 or R5; R2 is 1-6C alkyl;R3 is H, Cl, Br, R2 or -O-R2; R4 is 1-18C alkyl, 4-15C cycloalkyl, or 7-15C aralkyl; R5 is R4-(O-(CH2)2-)-(4-100); Z is a gp. (II), in which A is -CH2- (pref.) or -NR2; n is 1-100 (10-80), esp. 30-50; m is 1-3 (pref. 3). Use of (I) as (i) a combinable co-catalyst in anionically catalysed polymerisation of cyclic lactams, esp. epsilon-caprolactam, or (ii) reactive filler in prepn. of synthetics by diisocyanate poly-addn., is claimed. Appln. (i) gives tough, elastic polyamides with higher flame resistance. Polymerisation is 8-9x more rapid than when low-mol. carbodiimides are used as catalyst.
