A coin-operated billiard table includes a back up battery system to ensure operation in the event of main battery run down. The table has a controlled gate for the balls that is only activated when a coin has been inserted and has passed satisfactorily through a checking station. A main battery (6) provides power for a solenoid to open the gate. The battery is connected in a circuit with a reserve battery (13) that is switched in over a diode (14) when the main stage is depleted. An alternative supply can be provided by a mains connected system.
