The air cooled disc brake for a car has heat pipes (10) mounted onto the brake callipers and with their other ends curved upwards and away from the brakes to position in the airstream alongside the wheel. The brake is cooled without requiring special brake pads. The brake pads and mountings are thermally coupled to the callipers and saddle, with the heat pipes bolted to the inside face of the callipers. A conventional disc brake can have the cooling attached as an optional extra, without major modifications.
