摘要 <p>This invention generally relates to electrical connectors and more particularly to electrical connectors for receiving a male connector or printed circuit board. Specifically, this invention relates to an improved electrical contact structure within an electrical connector for printed circuit boards whereby the electrical contact maintains electrical continuity therethrough independent of the circuit board until the circuit board achieves electrical contact therewith. It is sometimes highly desirable or even necessary to maintain an electrical continuity or closed circuit between the paired contact members without the presence of a circuit board therebetween. Previous designs to achieve the above generally included bifurcated electrical contact members whereby a continuous closed circuit is constantly maintained directly between the contact members with or without the presence of a circuit board therebetween. One problem with such a design is that short circuiting may occur when the circuit board is in place between the contact members due to the continuous direct electrical contact between the contact members simultaneous with the continuous contact between the contact members and the circuit board. The present invention overcomes the above problems by providing, an electrical connector having electrical contacts which maintain electrical continuity therethrough independent of the printed circuit board until the circuit board is in electrical engagement therewith at which point the direct circuit between the contact members ceases.</p>
