PURPOSE:To facilitate the removal of heat and the separation of products in the reaction of CO and H2, and to carry out the reaction in liquid phase at low temperature without recycling a large amount of unreacted gas, by using a copper compound and an alkali metal halide as reaction catalysts. CONSTITUTION:An oxygen-containing organic compound such as methnol is prepared by reacting CO with H2 at a molar ratio of 1/1-1/5 at <=200 deg.C, pref. 90- 185 deg.C in a reaction medium which is liquid under the reaction conditions, in the presence of a catalyst obtained by mixing (A) a copper compound such as copper alkoxide, copper allyloxide, etc. and (B) 0.5-10mol, based on 1mol of (A), of an alkali metal halide. The reaction product can be obtained by taking out a part or the whole of the liquid reaction mixture free from accompanied raw material gas, and subjecting to e.g. extractive distillation, etc. Higher reaction pressure results in higher rate of reaction, and the presence is pref. between 50 and 80kg/cm<2>. |
