The isolation of (CH3)aSnX4-a (I) or BuSnX3 (II) (where a is 2 or 3; X is Cl, Br or I) from aq. soln. contg. >2 wt. % (I) or (II) comprises (i) adding an inert, water-sol. salt (III) to give a concn. of 50g (III)/100 ml water up to (super-) satn. w.r.t. (III); (ii) maintaining the temp. of the soln. at ambient to b.pt. so that (I) or (II) separates from aq. phase; and (iii) isolating (I) or (II). Hydrocarbyl, esp. alkyl tin had lies are used as catalysts, herbicides, antimicrobials, insecticides, auxiliary heat stabilisers for halogen-contg. polymers etc. The process is simple, relatively inexpensive, and gives (I)/(II) in relatively pure form and high yield. The (I)/(II) does not redissolve on cooling the soln.
|
